Huawei and Qualcomm sign patent cross-licensing deal for 5G, AI and other tech

Huawei and Qualcomm have reached a new patent cross-licensing agreement covering a range of technologies, including 5G, artificial intelligence and other communications-related innovations.
The agreement marks another important development in the relationship between the two technology companies and gives both sides access to each other’s relevant patented technologies under the terms of the deal.
Agreement covers 5G and AI technologies
The cross-licensing agreement reportedly covers patents related to several key areas of modern technology. Among them are 5G communications and artificial intelligence, two fields that have become increasingly important across smartphones, connected devices and other consumer electronics.
Patent licensing agreements allow companies to use patented technologies without having to negotiate separate arrangements for every individual implementation. They can also help reduce the risk of prolonged intellectual-property disputes between major technology companies.
A significant development for both companies
Huawei has developed a substantial portfolio of telecommunications and wireless technology patents over the years, while Qualcomm is one of the industry’s major contributors to cellular technologies and smartphone chip technology.
A cross-licensing arrangement between the two companies can therefore provide both parties with broader access to technologies that may be relevant to their future products and services.
The agreement also highlights the importance of intellectual property in the development of next-generation connectivity and computing technologies.
What this means for smartphones
5G remains a fundamental technology for modern smartphones, while AI capabilities are becoming increasingly integrated into mobile devices.
The licensing deal does not necessarily mean that consumers will immediately see a specific new Huawei or Qualcomm product. Instead, its importance lies in the legal framework that allows the companies to use covered technologies as they develop future products.
It could also provide greater flexibility as both companies continue investing in areas such as advanced connectivity, AI processing and next-generation mobile technologies.
More than just a 5G deal
Although 5G is one of the most notable areas covered by the agreement, the inclusion of AI and other technologies makes the deal broader than a traditional cellular patent arrangement.
As smartphones and connected devices increasingly combine high-speed connectivity with on-device artificial intelligence, agreements covering multiple technology areas could become more important across the industry.
For Huawei and Qualcomm, the new cross-licensing agreement establishes a framework for continued use of each company’s relevant patented technologies while both continue developing their respective technology portfolios.
